Adjectives

When using an adjective we can build our sentence the following way: 

S – V – ADJ

Examples:

Der Apfel ist rot. The apple is red.
Die Lehrerin ist freundlich und offen. The teacher is friendly and open.
Sind die Bücher teuer? Are the books expensive?

When we answer negatively to such a question, we have two options:

A: Sind die Bücher teuer?

B: Nein, sie sind billig. No, they are cheap.
B: Nein, sie sind nicht teuer. No, they are not expensive.

So we use either the opposite adjectives or we negate with “nicht”.
