Building (good) sentences

So the position of the words are being tought in the beginning as very strict. But it is mostly the subjects and verbs needing the most attention. You learned the pattern

S-V-O Example: Ich bin Lehrerin. I am a teacher.

You can exchange S and O if you want, but in short sentences, it sounds a bit unnatural.

O-V-S Example: Lehrerin bin ich. I am a teacher.
Better: Lehrerin bin ich schon seit 2 Jahren. I am a teacher since 2 years.

Questions are built like this:
V-S-O? Example: Bist du Lehrerin? Are you a teacher?

(More exchanges are possible, but not necessary in A1)

Substituting personal pronouns in questions

Example: Der Film gefällt dir. Dir gefällt der Film. You like the movie.

As you can see, S and O can be exchanged. The verb stays in position 2.

Attention!

If you substitute the nouns with personal pronouns in a question, you can not place them wherever you want.

Example:
Gefällt er dir? V-S-O Do you like it (the movie)?
Gefällt dir er? V-O-S >>>>> DON’T SAY THAT!!
Nimmst du ihn? Do you take it?
Nimmst ihn du? V-O-S >>>>> DON’T SAY THAT!!

Practicing is fundamental! Check out this video ^

TE-KA-MO-LO

….helps you to put your sentences in order.

TE = TEMPO
= time words (heute, nächstes Jahr, bald…)

KA = KAUSAL
= cause words (wegen des Wetters, aufgrund seiner Arbeit…)

MO = MODAL
= how (schnell, später, mit Freunden…)

LO = LOKAL
= location words (nach Deutschland, zum Park…)

This is the order you can put your sentence, when you are not too sure.

Example:
Petra war heute wegen des Wetters zu spät im Büro.
Petra was too late in the office due to the weather.
