Verbs in German get conjugated, that also happens for the Imperative form. When do we need that form? When we give an order or advice directed directly to somebody. That means we only need the verb forms for “du” and “ihr” in singular and plural. Follow the following steps:
For singular informal: 1. Take a verb and cut off the ending. Sagen — Sag!
For plural informal: 1. Take a verb and cut off the ending. Sagen — Sag! 2. Add – t. Sagen — Sagt!
For singular and plural formal: 1. Take the verb and add the personal pronoun. Sagen — Sagen Sie!
Unfortunately, we have some irregularities. Check them out here in the video below!
Building the imperative with separable verbs
Separable verbs need a bit more attention.
1. Take verb and open it. Mitnehmen — Mit/nehmen 2. The verb gets conjugated in imperative (see left side). The prefix comes at the end. Mit/nehmen — Nimm mit!
Example: Nimm deinen Ausweis mit! Take your ID with you.
