Prepositions
You learned before, that verbs that impact the object define if an object is accusative or dative (and rarely nominative).
Examples:
Er ist Arzt. >> Object in nominative
Ich kenne den Arzt nicht. >> Object in accusative
Ich traue dem Arzt. >> Object in dative
But prepositions also are categorized. In English it is similar. We say “She yells at him.” or “I go to her.” and so on. But in German it is more complex, of course.
Accusative
The following prepositions need an accusative object.
bis – until
durch – through
für – for
gegen – against
ohne – without
um – at
Sometimes we do not need an article so that the case accusative is not that visible.
Examples:
Maria kann ohne Handy nicht leben. Maria can not live without (a) phone.
Du gehst ohne Geld ins/in das Restaurant? You go without money to a restaurant?

Dative
The following prepositions need a dative object:
aus – from
bei – at
mit – with
seit – since
nach – to, towards
von – from
zu – to
gegenüber – opposite to (at the end)
Examples:
Der Bahnhof ist dem Kaufhaus gegenüber. The train station is opposite to the department store.
Er wohnt seit 2020 in Deutschland. He lives in Germany since 2020.
Kommst du von der Arbeit? Are you coming from work?

Careful!
Some prepositions can be accusative OR dative. They are called “Wechselpräpositionen” and are A2 Grammar.
