Dative and accusative in one sentence

Double trouble - what comes first?

If you are not familiar with dative and accusative or you feel a bit unsure, please check out my A1 grammar course on YouTube.

S – V – O (D) – O (A)

That is the most common pattern. Many books say that the dative is the person and the accusative is the thing. Example:

Ich schicke dem Professor einen Brief. I send (to) the professor a letter.

BUT: Do not think that dative is always living-things, that is not the case. When we have dative and accusative in one sentence yes, it is most likely. But we can also say:

Ich traue der Sache nicht. I do not trust the situation. (“the thing”)

Substituting objects with pronouns change everything!

I make it short and clear (as always):

1st case: both objects are in dative and accusative –> mostly D, then A

2nd case: the dative object is a pronoun, the accusative object not –> D, then A

3rd case: the accusative object is a pronoun, the dative object not –> A, then D

4th case: both objects are pronouns –> A, then D

Sounds to complicated? I SWEAR you will understand it with the video on the left sideThe explaination starts at 4:33
