S – V – O (D) – O (A)
That is the most common pattern. Many books say that the dative is the person and the accusative is the thing. Example:
Ich schicke dem Professor einen Brief. I send (to) the professor a letter.
BUT: Do not think that dative is always living-things, that is not the case. When we have dative and accusative in one sentence yes, it is most likely. But we can also say:
Ich traue der Sache nicht. I do not trust the situation. (“the thing”)

Substituting objects with pronouns change everything!
I make it short and clear (as always):
1st case: both objects are in dative and accusative –> mostly D, then A
2nd case: the dative object is a pronoun, the accusative object not –> D, then A
3rd case: the accusative object is a pronoun, the dative object not –> A, then D
4th case: both objects are pronouns –> A, then D
