Articles and nouns in nominative

What are the German articles?

Articles – der, die, das – are the grammatical genders for every noun there is in Singular. Nouns in German are called “Subastintiv” and always start with a capital letter. We have two categories: definite and indefinite articles.

der Baum ——- ein Baum (male)

die Tomate ——- eine Tomate (female)

das Museum ——- ein Museum (neutral)

 die […] ——- xxx […] (Plural)

Attention: the indefinite plural is non-existent!

Articles have a bad reputation, German learners are quite afraid of them. But there is no need. When you learn a new noun, always learn the gender. Some rules can help you not have to learn everything by heart. Just click on the video >>

Negation of nouns

Now that you know the indefinite articles you can also negate nouns (we firstly did that in section “word position”). When you want to say: “This is not coffe.” you have now two options.

Example 1: Das ist nicht Kaffee. (negating the verb)
Example 2: Das ist kein Kaffee. (negating the noun)

To use this kind of negation you do the following:

k + indefinite article

Keep in mind, that even though we have no plural for indefinite articles, we have a plural for “kein-“.

Example: Sie hat keine Kinder. She has no kids.

After practicing (click on the right video) you will see, that this grammar field is one of the easier ones.

Master the plural!

We learned nouns and articles in nominative. But we only talked about singular so far. Lets check out the plural. Similar to the articles, the plural forms are not easy to assume. You better learn them by heart when you learn a new noun. All nouns in plural have the article “die”! On the video I try to give you as many props to master the plural rules in the next video! <<
